What is Breaker Project ?
The Breaker Project is a community-based, socially engaged art initiative established in 2003 as part of a cultural policy program facilitated by the City of Osaka. Originally launched in the Shinsekai area of the Naniwa Ward, the project later expanded its activities into the Nishinari Ward.
Through collaborations with artists who pursue original forms of expression beyond established frameworks, we develop platforms for creative practice embedded in everyday life. By sharing artistic processes with local residents, we undertake experimental projects that are site-specific, research-based, participatory, and collaborative, creating opportunities for diverse encounters and connections within the community.
Our mission is to bridge the gap between art--particularly contemporary art--and people, fostering more active relationships between them. Through our activities, we also seek to reconsider the role of art in contemporary society.
The Breaker Project exists not only for the benefit of artists and the arts, but also for the communities in which it works. We believe that art, by offering new perspectives and diverse values, is essential not only to everyday life but also to broader social change.
Our long-term vision is to cultivate artistic practices rooted in specific places and communities, thereby expanding the presence of art within society. At the same time, we aim to nurture individual imagination and creativity, contributing to the co-creation of a mature and inclusive civil society.
