2022-2023年度のレジデンスプログラムとして、美術家・岩谷雪子を招聘しプロジェクトを展開しました。岩谷は、雑草と総称され普段は見過ごされがちな植物に注目し、個々の形状や生態を注意深く観察しながら、採集した植物を乾燥させて再構成する立体やインスタレーション作品を制作する作家です。今回は、都会のなかで逞しく（またひっそりと）自生・共生する 植物をリサーチし、そこで見えてくる風景やその背後にある事象にもまなざしを向け、一年以上かけてのフィールドワークとなっています。
植物を通して西成というまちに出会った岩谷は、採集した空き地や公園などを中心にその土地の変遷や記憶を聞き取るなど、文化人類学的な手法にもアプローチしています。またその過程で収集したものや道端で見つけた（拾った）ものなども作品の要素となり、展覧会ではまちなかに作品を点在させる展開となっていきました。
来場者は、メイン会場となったイチノジュウニのヨンのほか、昔ながらの銭湯や宿屋、路地裏にある地蔵の祠など、周辺のさまざま場所(6ヶ所)に設置された作品を探してまちを歩き、刻々と変化していく風景や路傍の雑草と出会いながら、岩谷が行ったフィールドワークを（部分的ではありますが）追体験することになります。それは、作品の鑑賞にとどまらず、私たちの生活を取り巻く環境や社会状況にそれぞれが思考を巡らせる契機となったのではないでしょうか。
As part of its ongoing activities in Nishinari, Osaka, the Breaker Project invited artist IWATANI Yukiko to develop a project during her 2022-2023 residency.
IWATANI collects plants that are often overlooked and dismissed as 'weeds,' studying their forms and ecologies before drying, reconstituting, and transforming them into sculptures and installations. Throughout her residency, she conducted fieldwork observing these plants as they quietly flourished within the urban environment. Through this process, she directed her attention not only to the landscapes in which they grow, but also to the phenomena and histories embedded within them.
While exploring the vacant lots and parks where she collected plants, IWATANI gradually came to know Nishinari. Her research also took an anthropological approach, incorporating interviews with local residents about their memories of the area and the changes they have witnessed over time. Objects gathered during her fieldwork - including items found along the roadside - became elements of her artworks, which were installed throughout the neighbourhood.
As a result, the exhibition extended beyond its main venue, Ichinojuninoyon, to six satellite locations, including a former public bathhouse, a hostel, and a small shrine tucked in an alley.
By travelling between these sites, visitors were invited to engage with the changing urban landscape and the roadside "weeds" that inhabit it, retracing IWATANI's fieldwork in their own way. The project offered an opportunity not only to experience contemporary art, but also to reflect on the environmental, social, and economic forces that shape our everyday lives.

1958 年札幌市生まれ、高知市在住。武蔵野美術大学日本画科卒業。植物による立体、映像、インスタレーション等の作品を制作。植物のありのままの姿やその周辺の環境を含めて観察し、特に普段見過ごされがちな雑草などの小さな存在に目を向けると同時にそれらの生命の声を聴く、或は感じるための場としての表現を追求する。
近年の主な展覧会に「はならぁと」(奈良, 2022年)、「MIND TRAIL」(奈良, 2022年)、「六甲ミーツアート」(兵庫, 2019/2021年)、「植物は、うごく」高知県立牧野植物園（2020年）、「BIWAKOビエンナーレ」(滋賀, 2018年) 、「Moving Plants」Rønnebæksholm（デンマーク, 2017）、「大地の芸術祭 越後妻有アートトリエンナーレ」(新潟, 2015年)など、芸術祭やグループ展に出品するほか、The Third Gallery Aya (大阪)や高知、東京などで個展も開催する。六甲ミーツアート2019 では公募大賞グランプリを受賞。
